There are many words to describe what a mother truly is to her children and family – the heart, the glue, the rock are just some among many others.
As I reflect on the mothers in my own life, all are very true. However, I can confidently add one more descriptor – pure gold.
Recently our youngest son Ryan had an event at school – Gold Mining Day. It was a culmination of weeks of learning about California history and a marquee event of the year. As she has countless times before, Carolyn without a second thought invested herself fully into making her son have everything he needed to ensure the day and experience was a rounding success. No matter all the other demands on her time and energy, she just made it work. The big smile on Ryan’s face while dressed in his mining outfit reflected her impact, support, and love. What could have easily been just another day is now undoubtedly a core memory for him. That’s pure gold.
Then there’s my own mom, singing “You are My Sunshine” on my voicemail the other day just because she wants to brighten her adult son’s day. Or my mother-in-law making an effort to say “I love you” and make me laugh even while battling a debilitating disease. All pure gold.
That’s just what mothers do that makes them pure gold – they selflessly and without hesitation show up no matter what. Through thick and thin, through good times and bad, they are there. Often at a drop of a hat. By just being there they show their love, give us hope, comfort, and immeasurable support.
But showing up is not the only reason why mothers are pure gold….
- Mothers are the pillars of strength and the rock of stability in a turbulent world. They are the glue that holds families together and the foundation on which our lives are built.
- Mothers inspire us, teach us, encourage us, and shape us into the people we become. They show us how to be compassionate yet strong in the face of adversity, and how to find joy in the small moments.
- Mothers are resilient and work tirelessly, and often in the background for no accolades, to make sure their children are happy, healthy, and safe. Their devotion is truly inspiring.
For these reasons and more, mothers will always be pure gold and in no small measure. For all of us with these golden mothers in our lives we’ve hit the mother lode (just like some of those lucky 49’ers young Ryan learned about)!
So on this special day, we want to take a moment to honor and thank all the mothers out there who have sacrificed so much and dedicated their lives to nurturing and raising their children and supporting their families. Know you are loved and appreciated beyond measure.
Happy Mother’s Day!
With gratitude and awe,
Kevin
