Halfway Through the Year: What Deserves a Second Look in Your Plan?
Summer is in full swing—and while vacations, family time, and warm evenings may be top of mind, this midpoint in the year is also the perfect time to pause and ask:
“Is my estate plan still aligned with my life today?”
A lot can change in six months. Whether it’s a financial shift, a health concern, or a family milestone, your estate plan should evolve with you. If it’s been more than a year since your last review—or if life’s been busy—it’s time for a check-in.
What Should You Be Looking At Mid-Year?
Here are six areas worth revisiting before the second half of the year takes off:
1. Have There Been Any Major Life Events?
New baby? Marriage? Divorce? A death in the family? A diagnosis?
Any of these should trigger a review of your plan, including guardianship choices, healthcare agents, and beneficiary designations.
2. Are Your Fiduciaries Still the Right People?
Look at who you’ve named as:
- Trustee
- Power of Attorney
- Health Care Agent
- Executor
Ask: Do they still live nearby? Are they still capable and willing? Have your relationships changed?
3. Have Your Finances Shifted?
- New accounts opened?
- Real estate bought or sold?
- Retirement or investment changes?
If so, make sure your assets are properly titled and your trust is up to date (and funded!).
4. Are Your Children Growing Up—or Aging Parents Needing Help?
Young adults may now need their own emergency plans.
Elderly parents may need more support—and you may need to plan ahead for caregiving, finances, or housing transitions.
5. Do You Have Any Digital or Practical Gaps?
Update:
- Passwords or access instructions
- Online banking or cloud-based storage
- Emergency contacts and instructions for pets, properties, or business responsibilities
6. Have You Communicated with Your Family or Advisors?
Your plan works best when the right people know what to do—and where to find what they need. A short conversation or email can save hours of confusion down the road.
Final Thought: A Mid-Year Review Keeps You on Track—Without Overwhelm
Estate planning doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking. A simple check-in can uncover what needs tweaking, what’s working well, and what steps you can take to stay protected and prepared.
