Don’t Let Your Plan Take a Vacation

Summer is in full swing—vacations are booked, kids are out of school, and your calendar might finally have some breathing room. It’s the perfect time to relax, recharge, and maybe even catch up on that to-do list that’s been lingering since January.

But while you’re taking a well-earned break, here’s one thing you don’t want taking time off: your estate plan.

A lot can change in six months. That’s why summer is a smart time to pause and ask:
Is your estate plan still current, clear, and capable of doing what you need it to do?

The Mid-Year Estate Plan Refresh Checklist

Before you pack your bags or dive into the next BBQ, take a moment to review these key areas of your plan:

1. Have There Been Any Life Changes?

Your plan should reflect your current reality. If any of these have happened since you last updated your documents, it’s time to revisit your plan:

  • Marriage, divorce, or remarriage
  • Birth or adoption of a child or grandchild
  • Death or incapacity of someone named in your plan
  • A move to a new state
  • Major changes in assets or income

2. Are the Right People Still Named?

Over time, the people you once trusted for key roles might no longer be the right fit—or no longer available. Double-check:

  • Trustees and successor trustees
  • Agents under your power of attorney
  • Health care decision-makers
  • Guardians for minor children
  • Beneficiaries (especially on life insurance and retirement accounts)

3. Has Your Trust Been Properly Funded?

Creating a trust is a powerful tool—but it only works if your assets are actually titled in the name of the trust. Make sure:

  • Real estate has been transferred to the trust
  • Bank and investment accounts are properly titled or aligned
  • Beneficiary designations don’t conflict with your plan

4. Do Your Loved Ones Know What to Do?

An estate plan doesn’t help much if no one can find it or understand it. Take time to:

  • Let your successor trustees and agents know their roles
  • Share where your documents are stored
  • Consider using a secure digital platform like Everplans or DocuBank for easy access

5. Are You on Track for Year-End Goals?

This is also a good time to:

  • Review charitable giving plans
  • Explore gifting opportunities before year-end
  • Discuss tax strategies with your CPA or advisor
  • Make sure your business succession planning is on pace

A Plan That Works in Every Season

Your estate plan isn’t something you create once and forget. It should evolve with your life—growing and shifting as your family, goals, and finances change. A quick mid-year review is a simple but powerful way to keep your plan ready for whatever comes next.

Whether you’re heading out of town or enjoying a staycation, take a few moments this summer to give your estate plan a little attention. It’s a small effort that can make a huge difference—especially when it matters most.
